Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta ®
Order of Malta Grants Guidelines
- Grants will be restricted to tax-exempt organizations in the United States that have a clear, charitable or religious purpose to assist the sick and the poor or have a clear relationship to the Defense of the Roman Catholic Faith.
- Projects supported by a grant must demonstrate that their establishment will directly or significantly enhance the spiritual and physical condition of those they are intended to serve - "Our lords, the sick and the poor" or provide opportunities in the Defense of the Roman Catholic Faith.
- The Board of Councillors will approve all grants, except for grants which the President may, in his discretion, authorize. The President will exercise this authority only in unusual, emergency or extraordinary situations. The President may authorize individual grants in amounts not to exceed $10,000. Notice will then be given to the Grants Committee Chair.
- The Grants Committee will consider seriously funding projects in which members of the Association are actively involved. In most situations, the awarding of grants will require support from the Area Chair or other members, where applicable. In the ideal, grants should challenge recipients to develop additional sources of future income. Some Malta grants should serve as "seed money" and not be seen as total, continuing, or automatic sources of support. Grants should be made to projects and programs that do not have large broad-based resources, but, in the main, to those projects and programs that require the American Association\'s support to succeed or to make an appreciable difference in the requesting program\'s ability to respond to the needs of the Order.
- The Grants Committee will recommend to the Board of Councillors either direct grants or matching grants which, under ordinary circumstances, will not exceed $25,000 per calendar year, unless specifically increased by the Board of Councillors.
- Grant recipients may reapply for funding in subsequent years. Decisions to fund in subsequent years will be based in part on a full report of the results of the initial grant. Requests for additional funding must have the written support, wherever possible, of the appropriate Area Chair.
- Grants will not be made to support a budget shortfall.
- Under ordinary circumstances, grants will be made only to support programs.
- In the ideal, seventy-five percent (75%) of the grants in any given year will be allocated to domestic Hospitaller programs and to the Defense of the Faith, and twenty-five (25%) will be allocated to Hospitaller programs in Central and South America.
- All organizations requesting a grant must use the Association\'s application form, which must be submitted in printed or typewritten form.
- All recipients will be required to file with the Association proof of the proper use of funds.
